معرفی
Professor Gareth Redmond is a distinguished academic at University College Dublin, serving as both Professor in the School of Chemistry and Vice-Principal for Research & Innovation for the College of Science. With a career spanning over two decades in nanotechnology research, he has established himself as a leading expert in nanomaterials and molecular self-assembly. His academic journey began at UCD where he earned both his B.Sc. (1991) and Ph.D. (1995) in Chemistry before undertaking postdoctoral positions at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne and the University of Bath.
Professor Redmond's educational background includes:
- B.Sc. in Chemistry, University College Dublin (1991)
- Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry, University College Dublin (1995)
His research focuses on the microscopy and spectroscopy of nanostructures, application of molecular self-assembly to fabricate nanoscale information processing and biotechnology devices, and development of low-cost nanostructure fabrication methods. His group has pioneered work in nanowire and nanotube systems, particularly exploring their electronic and optical properties for applications in sensing, energy conversion, and neuromorphic computing. Recent publications demonstrate significant advances in memristive devices based on organic materials, luminescent carbon nanofibers, and nanoparticle-based sensing platforms.
Professor Redmond's extensive publication record (over 95 peer-reviewed papers) shows a clear evolution from fundamental nanomaterials characterization to applied nanotechnology with strong biomedical and electronic applications. His recent work (2023-2024) has focused on memristive devices for neuromorphic computing, demonstrating analog resistance switching in squaraine-based nanowire and microtube systems that can emulate synaptic functions. Earlier work established expertise in luminescent nanomaterials and nanoparticle-based sensing, with applications spanning from medical diagnostics to environmental monitoring.
As an academic leader, Professor Redmond has coordinated numerous significant research projects across multiple EU Framework Programs (4th-7th), as well as Irish government-funded initiatives through Enterprise Ireland, Science Foundation Ireland, and the Higher Education Authority. His leadership extends to industry collaboration through Biosensia Ltd., a diagnostics company he co-founded, and service on national and international advisory bodies including the NanoIreland Task Force (2005-2008) and the European Commission's Self-assembly Working Group (2000).
Professor Redmond maintains an active teaching portfolio across multiple institutions, coordinating modules in Advanced Physical Chemistry, Quantum Mechanics, Surface Science & Technology, and Nanochemistry at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. His teaching activities demonstrate a commitment to training the next generation of scientists in cutting-edge nanotechnology concepts and methodologies.
