Gareth Loudon is a Professor of Creativity and Head of Programmes for the MA/MSc Innovation Design Engineering and MA/MSc Global Innovation Design at the Royal College of Art (RCA), collaborating with Imperial College London. His roles include academic leadership, research innovation, and industry partnerships.
He previously served as Associate Dean (Research) at Cardiff School of Art and Design and held senior roles at tech firms like Apple and Ericsson. A Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, his expertise spans creativity models, inclusive design, healthcare innovation, and intercultural collaboration.
Research Focus: Gareth explores creativity in interdisciplinary contexts, including healthcare, education, and creative industries. He investigates factors like psychophysiological states, cultural values, and organizational leadership that influence creativity. Projects include low-carbon housing design, rural healthcare in India, and user-centric design in FinTech.
Grants & Awards: Secured funding from Innovate UK, AHRC, and Welsh Government for projects like embedding UCD in product development and enhancing teacher skills for the New Curriculum for Wales. Awards include recognition for designing the Advanced Chinese Input Suite and BuddySync communication device.
Professional Ventures: Co-founded Centre for Creativity Ltd (creativity consultancy), Rikoset Ltd (protection products), and Light Minds Ltd (design research). His industrial experience includes pioneering handwriting recognition systems at Apple and commercializing speech technologies in Singapore.
Labs/Teams: Leads RCA’s School of Design, contributing to research centers like the Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design. Engaged in global initiatives like the Korea Institute of Design Promotion’s Low Carbon Homes workshop.
