Gareth Fisher is Associate Professor of Religion at Syracuse University, with affiliations in Asian Studies. His ethnographic research examines lay Buddhism revival in contemporary China, particularly transformations in religious practice and space since the Mao era.
Research explores intersections of Buddhist practice with secular governance, investigating how post-communist Chinese society negotiates religious expression. Current projects analyze temple restoration politics and moral dimensions of Buddhist conversion.
Publications demonstrate sustained focus on Buddhism's modernization, with recent works examining religious space, moral psychology, and karma reinterpretation. Article trends show increasing attention to lay practice evolution and cross-cultural religious adaptation.
