Ganiyat Alli is a Lecturer and Teaching Assistant at the Department of History, College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her research focuses on the intersection of religion, gender, and socio-political structures in West Africa, with a specific emphasis on Islamic traditions in Southwestern Nigeria.
Education:
- Bachelors in History and International Studies, University of Lagos, Nigeria
- Masters in Peace and Strategic Studies, University of Ilorin, Nigeria
- PhD in African History (In Progress), University of Illinois
Her research examines how Islamic literacy practices and gender roles have shaped social and political life in precolonial and colonial Yoruba societies, particularly in Iwo, Osun State. Her recent work in Lagos Journal of Historical Studies (2025) explores the historiography of ethnicity and race in African history, reflecting trends in critical race theory and postcolonial analysis.

She is affiliated with the Graduate Employee Organization (2023) and serves as a member of its Grievance Committee (2023) and co-convener of the HRI Social Movement Reading Group (2023–2025). She teaches Hist 100: Global History and Hist 104: Black Music.
