Gail McConnell is a Professor of English and Reader at Queen’s University Belfast’s School of Arts, English and Languages. Her research focuses on Northern Irish poetry, theology, queer studies, and literary form. She is the author of The Sun is Open (2021), a poetry collection exploring her father’s IRA-related murder, and Northern Irish Poetry and Theology (2014), analyzing poetic form and religious themes. She has been awarded the John Pollard Foundation International Poetry Prize and a Major Artist Award from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland.
Her work bridges literary criticism and creative practice, with radio features on BBC Radio 4 and collaborations with the Seamus Heaney Centre and Mitchell Institute. She teaches contemporary poetry, Irish literature, and creative writing, supervising PhD students in areas like Northern Irish poetry and post-Troubles literature. McConnell’s research projects include exploring cultural identity beyond nationalism and creative disruptions in voice-hearing networks.
Notable publications include Fothermather (2019), addressing queer parenthood, and Fourteen (2018), examining IVF and trauma. Her awards highlight her contributions to Irish poetry and literary studies, while her teaching and mentorship foster new voices in literature.
