Professor Gail Day is an academic at the School of Fine Art, History of Art and Cultural Studies at the University of Leeds. Her work bridges Marxism and Critical Theory, focusing on the intersection of aesthetics and politics, capitalism and form, and the legacies of dialectical thought. She has held administrative roles including Director of Research and Innovation (until 2022) and REF Unit of Assessment Lead (from 2022).
- Research Focus: Aesthetic form, uneven modernities, and the critique of capitalism in art
- Collaborations: Co-founded the Centre for Critical Materialist Studies, initiated Aesthetic Form and Uneven Modernities with international colleagues
- Education: BA (Hons) in Fine Art, MA in Social History of Art, PhD
Her research interrogates commodity culture, reification, and emancipatory practices in modern and contemporary art, particularly through the lens of Western Marxism and the New Left. Recent work analyzes the dialectical negation in art theory and the geographies of social transformation.
Key articles explore the documentary poetics of Allan Sekula, uneven capitalism in visual culture, and avant-garde methodologies. These works collectively address the interface of radical aesthetics and historical paradigms, emphasizing non-identity in subject formation and critical practice.
Scientific Recognition:
- Shortlisted for the Isaac and Tamara Deutscher Memorial Prize for Dialectical Passions: Negation in Postwar Art Theory
As a mentor, she supervises postgraduate researchers and contributes to projects like Marxism in Culture at the University of London. Her professional memberships include the Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
