Her research program critically examines how societal norms, stereotypes, and values shape communication patterns across identity groups, with particular emphasis on disability, health outcomes, and identity formation. She investigates the complex interplay between interpersonal dynamics, intergroup relations, and systemic biases in communication contexts.
Professor Byrd specializes in the intersections of interpersonal communication, health communication, and stigma processes, teaching courses that analyze how multiple identity dimensions influence relational dynamics and health disparities. Her work bridges theoretical frameworks with practical applications in real-world communication scenarios.
As a dedicated mentor, she employs a hands-on collaborative approach to graduate advising, actively seeking students whose research aligns with her expertise in communication and identity studies. She prioritizes helping advisees achieve their academic and professional objectives through close partnership and tailored guidance.
