Gabriella M. Tranell

Professor Gabriella M. Tranell holds a MSc in Geotechnology/Metallurgy from Luleå University of Technology (LTU), Sweden, and a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Australia. She has been affiliated with NTNU since 2009, previously serving as Senior Scientist and Research Manager at SINTEF. Her research focuses on metallurgical processes, including ferroalloy production, silicon refining, environmental emissions mitigation, and recycling of metallurgical byproducts. Key projects include the SisAl technology for sustainable silicon production and the study of PAH emissions in industrial processes.

Her work spans interdisciplinary collaborations, addressing both technical challenges (e.g., optimizing aluminothermic reduction and slag behavior) and environmental concerns (e.g., LCA of recycling processes and circular economy metrics). Recent publications emphasize pilot-scale experiments, material characterization, and environmental impact assessments. She has contributed to industry-relevant solutions such as flue gas recirculation systems and salt-flux recycling strategies.

Tranell’s research group collaborates extensively with industry partners like SINTEF, focusing on translating lab-scale innovations into industrial applications.
