Prof. Gabriele Vogt holds the Chair in Japanese Studies and directs the Department of Asian Studies at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU Munich). Her research focuses on Okinawa’s identity politics, Japan’s demographic challenges, international labor migration, and societal responses to crises like the COVID-19 pandemic. She has authored influential works on Okinawa’s unresolved tensions with mainland Japan, including the 2022 paper on its 'unsettled membership' and a 2021 study on regional populism in Okinawan elections. Her work bridges political science, sociology, and historical analysis.
Prof. Vogt’s interdisciplinary research also addresses Japan’s aging population, robotic care technologies, and pandemic governance strategies. She has collaborated internationally, publishing in journals like Perspectives on Politics and Asian and Pacific Migration Journal. Her academic leadership includes directing LMU’s Japan Center, one of Europe’s leading institutions for Japanese Studies, with programs in language, culture, and socio-political research.
