Gabriele Scorrano is an Assistant Professor at the Lundbeck Foundation GeoGenetics Centre, Globe Institute, University of Copenhagen, where he has been working since 2022 under Principal Investigator Prof. Eske Willerslev. His research focuses on ancient DNA studies, paleogenetics, and molecular anthropology, with particular emphasis on understanding human population history through genomic analysis of ancient remains from Central-Southern Italy spanning from the Palaeolithic to Bronze Age periods.
Dr. Scorrano earned his PhD in Evolutionary Biology and Ecology (2009-2012), Master's degree in Biology and Human Evolution (2008), and Bachelor's degree in Human Biology (2005), all from the University of Rome Tor Vergata. His doctoral thesis focused on "Biomolecular Characterization of a Early Neolithic Population From Central Italy" under the supervision of Prof. Olga Rickards.
His research integrates genomic, proteomic, and isotopic analyses to investigate major questions in human prehistory, including the impact of Steppe migrations into Europe, the origins of Indo-European languages, and the evolution of disease susceptibility. Dr. Scorrano has made significant contributions to understanding population movements across Eurasia and their genetic and cultural consequences, with his work frequently published in high-impact journals including Nature and PLoS ONE.
Dr. Scorrano's recent publications demonstrate his expertise in population genomics, with studies examining ancient protein preservation, Native American population continuity, and the genetic basis of multiple sclerosis susceptibility emerging from steppe pastoralist populations. His work combines cutting-edge laboratory techniques with sophisticated analytical approaches to extract maximum information from ancient biological samples.
- Nick Norgan Award 2022 for "The genetic and cultural impact of the Steppe migration into Europe"
- Best poster at Congress in Zagreb, Croatia (2016) for research on isotope variation in Imperial Roman communities
- Best oral presentation at Congress in Monteporzio Catone, Italy (2017)
Dr. Scorrano serves as Co-Principal Investigator for a Riksbankens Jubileumsfond project (2022) and collaborates on multiple MIUR-PRIN projects in Italy. His teaching experience includes a Master's course on "Biomolecular methodologies applied to the study of ancient remains" at the University of Rome Tor Vergata (2014-2018) and lectures on Molecular Anthropology to the School of Paleoanthropology at the University of Perugia (2017).
As part of the GeoGenetics Centre at the University of Copenhagen, Dr. Scorrano collaborates with an international team of researchers working at the intersection of genomics, archaeology, and anthropology to unravel human history through ancient DNA analysis, contributing significantly to our understanding of European prehistory and population dynamics.
