Gabriele Lanzafame is an Assistant Professor in Geochemistry and Volcanology (GEO/08) at the University of Catania. His research focuses on Petrology, Petrography, Geochemistry, and Volcanology, utilizing advanced techniques such as synchrotron X-ray computed microtomography and 3D image analysis.
- PhD in Petrography and Petrology, 25th cycle (2010-2013), University of Catania
- Master's in Geological Sciences Applied to Land and Resource Management (2006-2009), University of Catania
- Bachelor's in Geology Applied to Land Conservation (2003-2006), University of Catania
His work explores volcanic processes, including magma crystallization, gas fluxing in lava tubes, and explosive eruption dynamics. He has extensively applied synchrotron-based imaging to study geological materials, mineral textures, and volcanic hazards. His recent publications address topics like asbestos in quarries, volcanic ash health risks, and 3D microstructural characterization of ceramics and geological samples.
Lanzafame has held postdoctoral positions at Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste and visiting researcher roles at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology in Rome. He is licensed as a professional geologist since 2009 and holds the National Scientific Qualification as Associate Professor (2020-2029) in competitive sector 04/A1.
