Gabriel Torrens is a Research Fellow at the Department of Molecular Biology, Umeå University, working in the Felipe Cava Lab. His research focuses on bacterial cell wall biology and antimicrobial resistance mechanisms in pathogens like Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus.
- BSc: Biological Sciences, University of the Balearic Islands
- MSc: Advanced Microbiology, University of the Balearic Islands
- PhD: Cell Wall Recycling in Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Centro de Biología Molecular Severo Ochoa and Umeå Microbial Research Center
His research explores how bacterial cell wall recycling influences β-lactamase expression and virulence, using advanced techniques such as liquid chromatography and LC-MS/MS. Current projects include studying lipid rafts in MRSA to inhibit antibiotic resistance and investigating the role of flotillins in membrane microdomains.
The 15 most recent articles highlight trends in peptidoglycan synthesis, β-lactam resistance, biofilm formation, and cell wall adaptivity, with a focus on pathogens like Agrobacterium tumefaciens, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Enterobacter cloacae.
- SSMF Fellowship for postdoctoral research
- Excellence of Choice Fellowship for cell wall biology studies
He collaborates with interdisciplinary teams at Umeå University and contributes to translational research aimed at developing novel antimicrobial therapeutics through the Felipe Cava Lab.
