Gabriel Sigmund

Dr. Gabriel Sigmund is an Assistant Professor in the Environmental Technology group (ETE) at Wageningen University & Research (Netherlands), focusing on contaminant sorption, mobility, and sustainable water treatment technologies. His research emphasizes biochar and carbon-based materials for pollution control, with a particular interest in persistent, mobile, and toxic (PMT) substances. He holds leadership roles in scientific societies, including chairing the expert committee on PMT contaminants in the German Water Chemistry Society and serving on the International Panel on Chemical Pollution (IPCP) Board.

Education includes a PhD in Environmental Science (University of Vienna, 2017) and MSc in Ecotoxicology (University of Applied Sciences Technikum Wien, 2013). Prior roles include Junior Research Group Leader at University of Vienna (2020-2023), PostDoc positions at Agroscope (Switzerland) and Technical University of Munich (Germany), and visiting researcher at Nankai University (China).

Research interests span biochar applications, contaminant fate in engineered/natural systems, and the science-policy interface.
