Gabriel Reich

Dr. Gabriel Reich is Professor of Teaching and Learning at Virginia Commonwealth University's School of Education. A former NYC public school teacher, his research examines historical consciousness, Civil War memory, and the intersection of race and history education. He received VCU's Charles P. Ruch Teaching Excellence Award (2021) and Distinguished Scholarship Award (2019).

Research Focus: Dr. Reich investigates how cultural tools like monuments, standards, and teaching practices shape historical understanding. His current project analyzes Virginians' collective memories of the Civil War and emancipation, funded by the Spencer Foundation.
