Gabriel Oliver Codina

Gabriel Oliver Codina is a Full Professor in Computer Architecture at the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB), where he serves as the director of the Systems, Robotics and Vision Group (SRV-MARIS). He holds a PhD in Physics from Barcelona Tech (UPC) and has been actively involved in academic research and teaching since 1987.

His educational background includes a PhD in Physics from the Barcelona Tech (UPC). This strong foundation in physics has informed his interdisciplinary approach to computer architecture and robotics.

Professor Codina's research focuses on mobile robot visual guidance, 3D vision, and sensor-based navigation systems. His work spans several key areas including laser and sonar-based motion estimation, localization and mapping. His research specialties encompass Artificial Intelligence, Sensor Systems Design, and Underwater Craft technology, reflecting a broad yet integrated approach to robotics and computer vision.

Throughout his career, he has participated in more than 25 R&D funded research projects and contracts, personally leading over 20 of them. His scholarly output includes more than 125 research publications in the fields of computer vision and mobile robotics.

Professor Codina has made significant contributions to academic mentoring, having supervised 5 completed PhD theses with 2 additional theses currently in progress. His teaching portfolio is extensive, covering subjects such as analog and digital electronics, microcomputer systems, automatic control, industrial and mobile robotics, computer vision, and perception systems. He currently teaches Automatic Regulation, Extended Study of Robotics, Automation and Control, and Mobile Robot Sensorization and Control across multiple engineering programs.

His laboratory work centers around the Systems, Robotics and Vision Group (SRV-MARIS), a Consolidated R&D+I Group where he serves as the Main Researcher, focusing on marine robotics and intelligent systems applications.
