Gabriel Merino is a Professor in the Department of Applied Physics at the Center for Research and Advanced Studies Merida (Cinvestav Merida), Mexico, and a Level 3 researcher in the Mexican National Researcher System. He serves on the editorial board of Chemical Science and is a member of the Mexican Academy of Sciences.
His educational background includes:
- B.S. in Chemistry from Universidad de las Americas Puebla (1997)
- Ph.D. in Chemistry from Cinvestav Zacatenco under Alberto Vela (2003)
Merino leads one of Latin America's most active research groups in Theoretical and Computational Chemistry, specializing in chemical bonding, aromaticity, and the prediction of novel chemical structures. His work bridges quantum mechanical principles with practical chemical entity design.
His major recognitions include:
- Research Grant from Academia Mexicana de Ciencias (2012)
- Catedra Marcos Moshinsky (2012)
- National Prize "Andres Manuel del Rio" in Chemistry (2017)
- Walter Kohn Award (2018)
- Moshinsky Medal from UNAM's Institute of Physics (2019)
Merino maintains significant international collaborations through research stays at Cornell University (2005, with Roald Hoffmann) and the University of the Basque Country (2011, with Jesus Ugalde), strengthening Latin America's theoretical chemistry research network.
