Gabriel A. Wainer is a Full Professor at the Department of Systems and Computer Engineering, Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada. He holds a Ph.D. from Universidad de Buenos Aires (UBA) and Université d’Aix-Marseille III (France), and has held visiting positions at institutions including the University of Arizona, LSIS (CNRS), University of Nice, INRIA Sophia-Antipolis, and universities in Spain and Argentina. As a founder of the ACM/IEEE/SCS SIMUTools and SimAUD symposia, he has contributed extensively to modeling and simulation methodologies.
- M.Sc., University of Buenos Aires (1993)
- Ph.D., UBA/Université d’Aix-Marseille III (1998, highest honors)
His research focuses on Discrete-Event Modeling and Simulation, including Cell-DEVS formalism for cellular automata, Crowd Modeling, and Real-Time Embedded Systems. He pioneered Simulation Everywhere using RESTful Web Services and MSaaS, and studied applications like indoor COVID-19 spread and cellular network modeling. His work addresses the tradeoff between accuracy and efficiency in complex grid-shaped systems.
Prof. Wainer has received numerous accolades, including the SCS Outstanding Professional Award (2011), IEEE Outstanding Engineering Award (2019), and multiple Carleton University awards. He serves as Editor-in-Chief of SIMULATION and on editorial boards of journals like Journal of Simulation and Wireless Networks. He leads Carleton’s Advanced Real-Time Simulation lab (V-Sim) and has organized over 150 conferences, including ACM SIGSIM PADS and Winter Simulation Conference.
