G. Marcus Cole is the Joseph A. Matson Dean and Professor of Law at the University of Notre Dame’s Notre Dame Law School, serving since July 2019. A leading scholar in empirical law and economics, his research focuses on corporate bankruptcies, venture capital structures, and technology-driven solutions for poverty. Prior to Notre Dame, he spent 22 years at Stanford Law School, holding endowed chairs and serving as Associate Dean for Curriculum and Academic Affairs.
He earned a bachelor’s in applied economics from Cornell University and a Juris Doctor from Northwestern University, where he was editor-in-chief of the Northwestern Journal of International Law and Business. His career includes clerkship at the U.S. Court of Appeals and legal practice at Mayer Brown. He has held visiting professorships globally, including at the University of Amsterdam, Leiden University, and Peking University.
Dean Cole spearheads the Religious Liberty Initiative, aiming to protect religious freedom worldwide. He advocates for open intellectual discourse, emphasizing exposure to diverse viewpoints. Notable awards include the 2023 Becket Legal Service Award and fellowship recognitions. He also focuses on international programs, expanding Notre Dame Law’s global reach through partnerships in Ireland, Israel, and beyond.
His commitment to faith and community is reflected in board roles with organizations like Rocketship Education and Bellarmine College Preparatory. He prioritizes financial aid accessibility, with 85% of law students receiving grants.
