Fuyuan Shen is the Donald P. Bellisario Professor of Advertising and Head of the Department of Advertising and Public Relations at the Donald P. Bellisario College of Communications, Penn State University. He is an affiliate faculty member of the Media Effects Research Lab and holds a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina. His expertise spans advertising, media effects, health communication, and political communication, with a focus on message framing, narratives, and persuasive communication in traditional and digital media.
Shen’s research examines how ads, news frames, and narratives influence cognitive and affective responses, particularly in health and social issue contexts. He employs experimental and survey methods to explore media effects and has published in journals such as the International Journal of Advertising and the Journal of Communication. His work has been recognized with Deans’ Excellence Awards for Research and Integrated Scholarship.
He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in advertising and strategic communications and has served as editor of Mass Communication and Society. Shen has also held visiting professorships at Hong Kong Baptist University and the University of Hawaii at Manoa. His lab focuses on advancing understanding of media’s role in shaping public attitudes and behaviors.
