Fumiko Nazikian is a Senior Lecturer in Japanese at Columbia University’s Department of East Asian Languages & Cultures and former Director of the Japanese Language Program. She joined Columbia in 2004 and has taught courses ranging from introductory to fourth-year Japanese and language pedagogy.
- PhD in Japanese Linguistics from the University of Sydney
- MA in Japanese Linguistics and Language Pedagogy from the Australian National University
Her research focuses on linguistic pragmatics, particularly discourse analysis and the intersection of linguistics and language pedagogy. Her publications highlight trends in digital communication, curriculum development, and interactive learning in Japanese education.
She has served as a reviewer for journals like AATJ Journal and Journal of Pragmatics, and as a committee member for the AP Japanese Language and Culture Course and the Japanese SAT. Her career spans roles at Princeton University, the University of Sydney, and the University of New South Wales.
