Fulton T. Crews is a Professor in the Department of Pharmacology and Psychiatry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine and a Courtesy Professor in Pharmacology and Therapeutics at the University of Florida. He previously served as Director of the Bowles Center for Alcohol Studies and holds the John Andrews Distinguished Professorship.
His research investigates alcohol-induced brain damage mechanisms, focusing on binge drinking effects, neuroinflammation, and impaired neurogenesis. Key discoveries include cortical region damage affecting impulse control, alcohol's impact on adult brain stem-progenitor cells, and persistent neuroinflammatory gene induction. He pioneers studies on adolescent alcohol exposure using rat models to assess long-term adult brain consequences.
Dr. Crews leads the NADIA consortium as Principal Investigator for administrative and scientific cores, coordinating eight multidisciplinary research components analyzing adolescent drinking effects through MRI, histology, and behavioral studies. Under his direction, the Bowles Center has become a leading institution in alcohol pathology research.
