Fukashi Kohori is an Assistant Professor at Waseda University's School of Advanced Science and Engineering, Faculty of Science and Engineering, Department of Applied Chemistry. His research focuses on biomedical engineering with particular emphasis on membrane technology, crystallization processes, and artificial organ development.
Dr. Kohori received his Ph.D. from Waseda University's Graduate School, Division of Science and Engineering, Major in Applied Chemistry (2000). Prior to that, he completed his undergraduate studies at Waseda University School of Science and Engineering, Department of Applied Chemistry (1996).
Dr. Kohori's research spans several critical areas in biomedical engineering. His primary focus is on membrane technology applications for medical devices, particularly hemodialysis systems and artificial organs. He has made significant contributions to understanding crystallization phenomena relevant to medical conditions such as gout and kidney stones. His work on membrane crystallization methods has provided new insights into protein crystal formation and pathological crystal formation in the human body. Additionally, he has pioneered research on artificial gills using oxygen carrier solutions, exploring both thermal and photoresponsive mechanisms for oxygen transfer.

His research has been supported by significant grants including a Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Grant for "Development of a new type oxygen concentrator using photoresponsive gas carrier solution" (2008-2010) and "Development of A Light-responsive Artificial Gill" (2004-2006). Current projects include "Elucidation of the mechanism of urolithiasis and its inhibition using a membrane crystallizer that mimics kidney" (2016-2019) and "Development of a new crystallization method using the liquid-liquid interface as a crystallization field" (2024).
Dr. Kohori is affiliated with multiple professional societies including The Society of Polymer Science, Japan; The Membrane Society of Japan; The Society of Chemical Engineers, Japan; and ERA-EDTA (European Renal Association - European Dialysis and Transplant Association). His research laboratory appears to focus on membrane technology applications for biomedical problems, particularly crystallization phenomena in medical contexts and artificial organ development.
