Prof. Frits Prinzen is a leading expert in cardiac electro-mechanics at the Department of Physiology, Cardiovascular Research Institute Maastricht (CARIM), Maastricht University. His career spans over four decades, with key appointments including Assistant Professor (1987-1997), Associate Professor (1997-2009), and Professor since 2009, specializing in heart pacing therapies and cardiac resynchronization.
- Education: Gymnasium B (Commenius College, 1966-1972); Medical Biology (University of Utrecht, 1972-1978)
- Sabbaticals: Johns Hopkins University (1995-1996), University of Göttingen (2004)
His research focuses on regional cardiac mechanics, dyssynchrony in heart failure, and optimization of pacing therapies. He has led major projects funded by the Dutch Heart Foundation, Medtronic, and EBR Systems, including studies on LV septal pacing, ischemia/reperfusion injury, and pediatric pacing. His work bridges animal experiments with computational modeling and clinical applications.
Recent scientific awards include:
- Hamburger Award (1999, 2008)
- CARIM Thesis Award (2008)
Prof. Prinzen has mentored numerous PhD candidates, including W. van Agt, K. Vernooy, and J. Lumens, contributing to advancements in CRT, QRS optimization, and pacemaker therapies. His publications span high-impact journals like JACC, Circulation, and Heart Rhythm, emphasizing mechanical-electrophysiological interactions and non-invasive diagnostics.
