Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Friedemann Kiefer is a distinguished academic and scientist at the University of Münster, serving as a Professor in the field of Intravital Molecular Imaging at the European Institute for Molecular Imaging (EIMI). He is also a director of EIMI and a member of the Cluster of Excellence "Cells in Motion" (CiM). His research focuses on lymphatic vessel morphogenesis, hypoxia, and inflammation, utilizing advanced imaging techniques like multiphoton and light sheet microscopy.
His research interests revolve around the developmental mechanisms of lymphatic vessels, interactions between hypoxia and immune cells, and quantitative imaging analysis. He collaborates with computer scientists and mathematicians to extract biological insights from complex image datasets. Notably, he pioneers methods to visualize hypoxia in real-time using genetically encoded reporters and studies the role of lymphatic vessels in diseases such as cancer and ocular pathologies.
Recent publications highlight his work on VEGF-C-dependent lymphangiogenesis, deep learning for tumor vasculature analysis, and innovations in microscopy technology. His scientific awards include the
- DFG fellowship
- Honorary Treasurer of the European Vascular Biology Organization (EBVO)
- Editorial Board Member for Molecular and Cellular Biology (since 2016)
Friedemann Kiefer has supervised a team of researchers at EIMI and led multiple DFG-funded projects. He emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, combining molecular biology with computational methods to address unresolved questions in vascular and lymphatic biology.
