Fredrik Hjorth is a Lecturer in Maritime Science at Linnaeus University, affiliated with the Faculty of Technology. He primarily works as a faculty administrator handling research matters and providing leadership support in the faculty presidency, while also teaching at the Maritime Academy.
His research focuses on maritime safety culture, particularly examining the gap between stated procedures and actual practices in maritime operations. He investigates how rules and routines interact with professional values, history, expectations, and behavior to shape safety outcomes. His work often centers on port state control inspections and the complex decision-making processes of maritime safety inspectors.
Hjorth completed his doctoral thesis in 2015 titled "Complexity and Ambivalence in Ship Safety Inspection: The view of Swedish Port state control officers," which examined how Swedish port state control officers perceive their role in enhancing maritime safety. He also completed a licentiate thesis in 2012 focusing on safety culture in Baltic Sea shipping.
He is an active member of the Maritime Science research group at Linnaeus University, where his work contributes to understanding how to achieve environmentally sustainable and safe maritime operations with good working conditions. His teaching primarily involves advanced level courses and supervision of independent projects.
