Fredrik Asplund is an Associate Professor and Docent in Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, affiliated with the School of Industrial Engineering and Management (ITM) and the Digital Futures Faculty. His research focuses on system safety, software engineering practices in CPS development, innovation ecosystems, and engineering education. Prior to academia, he worked in the telecommunications industry as a software architect.
He leads and contributes to projects such as GPARSE (Guaranteeing Pro-Active and Reactive Safety in intersections through resource management at the Edge). His work addresses safety challenges in autonomous vehicles, maritime systems, and industrial CPS applications, emphasizing sociotechnical constraints affecting engineers.
Teaching responsibilities include courses on embedded systems, mechatronics, and research methodology. He has supervised numerous master’s degree projects in embedded control systems, machine design, and mechatronics.
His research spans empirical studies of software tool integration, reference architectures, and cross-industry collaboration mechanisms. Recent work includes analyzing social capital in university-industry partnerships and developing frameworks for autonomic computing in CPS-of-Systems.
Publications highlight topics like boundary object usage in CPS co-engineering, collision mitigation algorithms, and skill alignment for early-career engineers.
