Frederick R. Bieber is an Associate Professor of Pathology at Harvard Medical School and a medical geneticist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. For more than three decades he has also taught genetics, pathology, and forensics at the Harvard Extension School. He directs the Center for Advanced Molecular Diagnostics within the Partners Healthcare System, providing cutting-edge molecular diagnostics to patients.
Dr. Bieber’s research centers on forensic applications of DNA technology for human identification. His expertise has been sought in high-profile cases, including service on the World Trade Center Kinship and Data Analysis Panel for 9/11 victim identification, the Hurricane Victim DNA Identification Expert Group for victims of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, and as a commissioned officer in the US Army Reserve at the Armed Forces DNA Identification Laboratory (AFDIL).
He has held numerous advisory roles: appointed member of the National DNA Databank of Canada Advisory Committee, the DNA Subcommittee of the New York State Forensic Commission, the FBI DNA Advisory Board, and the Scientific Advisory Board of the Virginia Department of Public Safety. In 2014 he was appointed to the inaugural US National Commission on Forensic Science, advising on improvements to forensic science in the justice system.
