Frederick Prete is a Lecturer in Biology at Lake Forest College. His research focuses on the behavioral ecology, neurobiology, and cognitive processes of praying mantises, particularly their visual systems, predatory behavior, and circadian rhythms. Prete holds a PhD in Biology from the University of Chicago (1992) and a BA from the University of Illinois at Chicago (1985), with postdoctoral research at the University of Chicago (1995–1996).

Prete’s research explores how praying mantises process visual stimuli to detect and capture prey, integrate sensory inputs for decision-making, and adapt to environmental rhythms. He co-authored key books like Complex Worlds from Simpler Nervous Systems (2004) and The Praying Mantids (1999), which delve into mantid neurobiology, ecology, and evolutionary adaptations. His work spans molecular, cellular, and behavioral levels, bridging psychology and neurobiology.
His recent articles highlight studies on mantis respiratory physiology, circadian modulation of behavior, and visual tracking mechanisms. Prete has presented at venues like the Society for Neuroscience Annual Conference and TEDxNEIU, advocating for interdisciplinary approaches to understanding animal cognition.
