Frederick N. Skiff is a Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Iowa, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. His research focuses on experimental and theoretical plasma physics, particularly plasma waves, instabilities, self-organization, and advanced diagnostics using laser spectroscopy. He leads the Skiff Research Group, which operates key experimental facilities including the Hawkeye Linearly Magnetized Experiment (HLMX) and a large multi-dipole discharge device. The group also collaborates with the Large Plasma Device (LAPD) at UCLA.
His research interests span plasma physics, laser spectroscopy, plasma diagnostics, nonlinear fluctuations, and kinetic theory. Students in his group engage in hands-on experimental work involving high-resolution spectroscopy, apparatus design, electronics, and computational data analysis, often bridging theory and experiment. His lab fosters interdisciplinary collaboration with space physics and astronomy researchers within the department.
