Damon's work combines ethnographic fieldwork in Papua New Guinea with interdisciplinary approaches exploring the intersection of environment, technology, and cultural systems.
Research Interests:
- Historical ecology and indigenous environmental knowledge
- Social organization and hierarchy in the Indo-Pacific region
- Cultural analysis of maritime technology (e.g., outrigger canoes)
- Comparative studies of Austronesian and East Asian civilizations

Recent Work:
Damon's 2017 book "Trees, Knots, and Outriggers" synthesizes 25 years of research on environmental knowledge in the Kula Ring. His 2016 World Archaeology article extends this into deep historical ecology, while other recent publications engage with Louis Dumont's theories and US cultural dynamics. He has conducted fieldwork in China (Sichuan, Fujian) exploring connections between Austronesian expansion and Chinese maritime history.
Professional Contributions:
- Organized major conferences including the 1978 Kula Conference (Cambridge) and 2009/2011 "Ecology and Time Systems" workshops
- Collaborated with scholars such as Julia Shaw (UCL) and Wang Mingming (Peking University)
- Developed courses on American culture, ecological anthropology, and material culture
Future Projects:
Comparative studies of Austronesian and Chinese maritime technologies, and analysis of flora references in cross-cultural contexts using a research assistant team.
