Frederick Chester is a Professor and David Bullock Harris Chair in Geology at Texas A&M University, serving as Co-Manager of the John W. Handin Laboratory for Experimental Rock Deformation. His research focuses on earthquake physics, experimental rock deformation, structural geology, and tectonophysics. He holds a Ph.D. (1988), M.S. (1983), and B.A. (1980) in Geology/Geophysics from Texas A&M University and the University of California, Santa Barbara, respectively.
His work emphasizes fracture mechanics, faulting, and frictional processes in rocks, with field and laboratory studies on semibrittle flow, consolidation, and seismic slip rates. Key contributions include investigations of the 2011 Tohoku-Oki earthquake's fault zone structure and frictional behavior, as well as deformation mechanisms in salt and granular materials.
Research affiliations include the Center for Tectonophysics and the Southern California Earthquake Center. His publications span over four decades, addressing topics such as fault zone lithology, stress evolution, and laboratory-derived constitutive models for geological materials. Chester’s experimental work integrates high-pressure deformation experiments with microstructural analysis to understand rock behavior under seismic conditions.
