معرفی
Frederic Silvestre is a Professor at the Institute of Life-Earth-Environment, University of Namur, where he leads the Research Unit in Environmental and Evolutionary Biology. With an h-index of 32 and over 2,569 citations, his research focuses on understanding how aquatic organisms adapt to environmental stressors through molecular, physiological, and behavioral mechanisms.
Education:
- Doctor of Science in Environmental Biology, University of Namur (2005)
- Master of Environmental Science, Université Libre de Bruxelles (1998)
- Master of Biology, Université de Liège (1996)
Dr. Silvestre's research spans environmental biology, evolutionary adaptation, and ecotoxicology, with particular emphasis on epigenetic mechanisms in aquatic organisms. His work investigates how DNA methylation, gene expression, and physiological responses enable fish species to adapt to environmental stressors such as heavy metals, temperature changes, and chemical pollutants. He employs cutting-edge genomic and proteomic approaches to study model organisms including mangrove rivulus fish (Kryptolebias marmoratus), zebrafish (Danio rerio), and turquoise killifish (Nothobranchius furzeri).
His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on the intersection of environmental stress, epigenetic regulation, and phenotypic plasticity. The research reveals how early-life exposures to contaminants can induce lasting changes in behavior and gene expression, while also exploring thermal adaptation mechanisms and stress physiology in aquatic organisms.
Dr. Silvestre has secured numerous research grants and leads several active projects including 'Epi-genomics for biodiversity conservation in Ecuador' and 'The epigenetic clock in the fast-living turquoise Killifish.' His work contributes significantly to understanding how environmental changes impact biodiversity at molecular and organismal levels.
He has supervised 35 students throughout his career and has been active in the scientific community, serving as keynote speaker at major conferences including the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology annual meeting (2012) and the First International Conference on Environmental OMICS (2011). His laboratory, the Research Unit in Environmental and Evolutionary Biology, maintains specialized facilities including the URBE Tape Station for advanced sequencing protocols.
