Fred Stoddard

Fred Stoddard is a Docent Professor at the Department of Agricultural Sciences, University of Helsinki, Finland. He is also affiliated with the Institute of Sustainability Science (HELSUS) and the Viikki Plant Science Centre (ViPS). His academic role includes supervising doctoral students in the Doctoral Programmes in Food Chain and Health, Plant Sciences, and Sustainable Use of Renewable Natural Resources.

Research Interests:

Stoddard's research centers on Vicia faba (faba bean) and broader legume crops, focusing on genomics, genetics, breeding, sustainability, and crop quality for food and feed. He addresses Europe's protein deficit by promoting grain legumes that fix nitrogen, enhance soil health, and reduce dependency on imported soybeans. His work integrates omics technologies to accelerate breeding for stress resistance and yield stability under climate change.
