Fred Shepherd is a Professor in the Department of Political Science at Samford University's Howard College of Arts and Sciences. His teaching portfolio includes:

- Genocide
- Human Rights
Additionally, he serves as the local CBS affiliate’s political analyst and teaches interdisciplinary courses in University Fellows, Latin American Studies, and Cultural Perspectives programs.
Shepherd holds a BA from Amherst College and a PhD from Georgetown University.
His research centers on human rights, genocide studies (particularly in Guatemala), religion and politics, Latin American politics, comparative politics, and U.S. foreign policy. He authored the book Christianity and Human Rights: Christians and the Struggle for Global Justice and has contributed to numerous academic volumes and journals. Current projects focus on comparative genocide studies, with special attention to Guatemala, and he has maintained affiliations with the Lilly Foundation, Holocaust Education Fund, and Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum.
Shepherd has been actively involved with the Lilly Foundation and Holocaust Education Fund, co-directing the 2004 Lilly Fellows National Research Conference on Christianity and Human Rights, and presented at the International Association for Genocide Scholars Conference.
