E. Fred Schubert is the Constellation Chair of the Future Chips Constellation and Professor in the Department of Electrical, Computer, and Systems Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Previously, he held roles at Boston University (full professor and adjunct) and AT&T Bell Laboratories. His research focuses on compound semiconductor materials and devices, including LEDs, lasers, and photonic structures. Key contributions include pioneering work on GaN-based devices, delta-doped structures, and anti-reflection coatings. Schubert has authored influential books on light-emitting diodes and holds over 28 patents. Awards include IEEE, APS, OSA, and SPIE fellowships, as well as the Humboldt Senior Research Award and R&D 100 recognition.
- Education: Master’s degree in physics, followed by research at Max Planck Institute and AT&T Bell Labs.
- Research Interests: Epitaxial growth, device fabrication, semiconductor characterization, and optoelectronic applications.
His work on anti-reflection coatings and nanostructured materials has advanced photovoltaic and sensor technologies. Schubert led the NSF-funded Smart Lighting Engineering Research Center, securing over $40M for Rensselaer. His students have achieved notable success in academia and industry, with several winning the Lemelson Student Prize.
- Awards & Grants: Senior Research Award (Humboldt), R&D 100, NSF ERC grants, and Provost Innovation Fund (BU).
- Labs/Teams: Principal Investigator for the NSF Smart Lighting Center and leader of interdisciplinary semiconductor research groups.
