Fred Karlsson is a Professor of General Linguistics at the University of Helsinki, where he has held a faculty position since 1980. His scholarly work spans syntactic theory, computational linguistics, phonology, and language complexity. As a pioneer in computational linguistics, he launched the Constraint Grammar framework in 1990.
- Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in phonetics from the University of Turku (1974)

In research, Karlsson has contributed to syntactic and morphological analysis, computational models of language, and corpus linguistics. His work in computational linguistics was recognized with the E. J. Nyström’s Prize in 1996.
