François Coutlée

Dr. François Coutlée is a Full Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Université de Montréal with a joint appointment as Associate Professor in Oncology at McGill University. Since 2013, he has served as Head of the Department of Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases at CHUM (Centre hospitalier de l'Université de Montréal) and leads an active research group at the CHUM Research Centre.

Education includes:

• Medical degree from University of Montreal (1982)
• Residency in Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, University of Montreal (1987)
• Postdoctoral fellowship at Johns Hopkins University specializing in persistent viral infections including HPV
• Additional research at Montreal Cancer Institute

Research focuses on molecular mechanisms of HPV persistence and carcinogenesis, with emphasis on:

• Molecular diagnostics for HPV detection and viral load quantification
• HPV-HIV co-infection dynamics in anogenital cancers
• Viral integration events in cancer progression
• Novel screening and prevention strategies
• Transmission patterns of oncogenic HPV strains

His work has been funded by CIHR, NIH, NCI, FRQS, and CANFAR.

Publications demonstrate consistent focus on HPV virology, with recent work emphasizing:
