Franz Prichard is an Associate Professor in the Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics at Florida State University (FSU), specializing in Japanese literary and visual media. His research bridges environmental humanities, photographic theory, and urban studies, with a focus on 20th-century Japanese cultural production. He holds a Ph.D. from UCLA (2011) and previously taught at institutions including Harvard University, Princeton University, and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
His first monograph, *Residual Futures: The Urban Ecologies of Literary and Visual Media of 1960s and 1970s Japan* (Columbia UP, 2019), examines how Japanese artists and writers responded to rapid urbanization. Current work explores ecocritical approaches with a planetary perspective, analyzing intersections between humans, material objects, and shared ecological worlds.
Prichard’s peer-reviewed articles and book chapters address topics such as Nakahira Takuma’s photographic theory, Komatsu Hiroko’s materialist photography, and Matsuda Masao’s urban landscapes. His courses cover Japanese film, media ecologies, and documentary practices.
His scholarly contributions reflect a commitment to transcultural critique and interdisciplinary methodologies, often weaving together literary, visual, and environmental perspectives.
