Franz Mauelshagen

Dr. Franz Mauelshagen is a Senior Academic Councillor at the Department of History, Faculty of History, Philosophy and Theology at Bielefeld University since August 2020. He is affiliated with multiple research groups including Pre-Modern History, Global and Interconnected History, and Society-Knowledge-Environment.

Dr. Mauelshagen's research focuses on the global history of climate change from 1450 to the present, the Anthropocene and Great Acceleration since 1950, planetary politics and international climate policy history, land-use change and pre-industrial CO2 minimum (1492-1800), energy and material culture transformations, and the scientific history of climatology.

His work spans environmental history, climate science history, and global policy studies, providing crucial historical context for contemporary climate challenges through interdisciplinary approaches that bridge historical scholarship with current environmental concerns.

Dr. Mauelshagen maintains significant research collaborations including the Vienna Anthropocene Network, Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies, and Rachel Carson Center for Environment and Society.
