Professor Frans van Liere is a faculty member in the Department of Historical Studies at Calvin University, where he also serves as Director of the Classical and Medieval Studies Program. His academic work bridges medieval history, biblical interpretation, and interfaith dialogue.

His research focuses on Medieval Biblical Exegesis, particularly the use of Jewish sources in Latin Bible commentaries, Jewish-Christian Relations, and the Avignon Papacy. He is currently working on a monograph on the Christian concept of Hebraica Veritas and editing Andrew of Saint Victor's Jeremiah commentary.
Professor van Liere has held prestigious roles such as the Corcoran Visiting Chair in Christian-Jewish Relations at Boston College (2022-23), where he organized a conference on "The Jewish-Christian Encounter over Scripture" and began compiling its proceedings for Brill’s Commentaria series. He has also co-edited multiple volumes in the Victorine Texts in Translation series, focusing on scriptural interpretation and mystical symbolism at the twelfth-century Abbey of Saint Victor in Paris.

He resides in Grand Rapids with his spouse, also a professor, and two sons. Outside academia, he enjoys playing the flute (modern and baroque), singing in the Bach Chorale, brewing mead, and occasional marathon running.
