Dr. F.R. (Frans) Stafleu is a Researcher at Utrecht University, affiliated with both the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine's Department of Population Health Sciences (Animals in Science & Society) and the Humanities Research Institute for Philosophy and Religious Studies. Born in 1953, he graduated as a veterinarian in 1982 and subsequently specialized in animal ethics.
His primary areas of expertise include Animal Ethics and Bioethics, with extensive work focusing on the ethical considerations surrounding animal experimentation, veterinary practice, and biomedical research. Dr. Stafleu's research bridges philosophical ethics with practical veterinary medicine applications.
He has been actively involved in numerous significant projects, most notably the NWO-MVI project "From animal model to translational strategy" (2015-2019), which examined ethical, scientific and institutional problems related to innovations in biomedical animal research. His scholarly work demonstrates consistent focus on translational research ethics and the implementation of ethical frameworks in animal testing.
Dr. Stafleu has served on multiple influential committees including the Animal Experiments Committee ABC (UMC and UU), the Animal Experiments Commission for Vocational Education Netherlands (BON) as Chair (2014-2016), and various ethics advisory committees for organizations including Topigs-Norvick, the Municipality of Utrecht, and the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research (TNO).
He has edited academic journals including "Podium voor Bio-ethiek" and "NVBe-Nieuwsbrief" and has been a prolific speaker, delivering over 35 invited talks on animal ethics topics at academic and professional venues since 2006, demonstrating his significant contribution to the field through both scholarly publication and public engagement.
