Frans Kaashoek is the Charles Piper Professor in MIT's Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and a member of the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) since January 1993.
His educational background includes:
- Ph.D. in Computer Science from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (1992), thesis on "Group communication in distributed computer systems" under Andy Tanenbaum
Professor Kaashoek's research focuses on computer systems, particularly operating systems, networking, programming languages, compilers, and computer architecture for distributed, mobile, and parallel systems. He leads the Parallel and Distributed Operating Systems (PDOS) group at MIT CSAIL, which conducts cutting-edge research in system design and implementation, with recent emphasis on formal verification techniques for distributed systems.
His current research direction centers on compositional verification methods for distributed systems, exemplified by the Flotilla project that earned the 2023 Amazon Research Award in Automated Reasoning.
Professor Kaashoek has received numerous prestigious awards:
- NSF National Young Investigator Award (1994)
- MIT EECS Spira Teaching Award (1997)
- MIT IEEE Best Undergraduate Advisor Award (2000)
- Inaugural ACM SIGOPS Mark Weiser Award (2001)
- ACM Fellow (2004)
- Member of the National Academy of Engineering (2006)
- ACM Prize in Computing (2010)
- Member of the National Academy of Arts and Sciences (2012)
- Amazon Research Award (2023)
Throughout his career, Professor Kaashoek has advised numerous graduate students and taught foundational MIT systems courses including 6.033 (Computer System Engineering), 6.828 (Operating System Engineering), and 6.824 (Distributed Systems). He has co-founded two successful technology companies: Sightpath Inc (acquired by Cisco Systems in 2000) and Mazu Networks Inc (acquired by Riverbed Technology in 2009), demonstrating strong industry impact from his research.
He leads the Parallel and Distributed Operating Systems (PDOS) research group at MIT CSAIL, which has produced influential systems including the educational operating system xv6 and has made significant theoretical and practical contributions to distributed systems over three decades.
