Dr Frank Slyne serves as a Research Fellow at the CONNECT Centre within Trinity College Dublin, specializing in next-generation telecommunications infrastructure with expertise spanning optical-wireless convergence, network virtualization, and resource optimization.
His academic credentials include:
- B.E. in Electrical Engineering from University College Cork (1988)
- M.Eng in Electronic Engineering from Dublin City University (1994)
With over two decades of industry experience as an engineering manager at Eircom overseeing ISP platforms, Dr Slyne transitioned to academia in 2012 to join Prof. Marco Ruffini's Optical Network Architecture research group. His current work focuses on optimizing Quality of Service in multi-tenant TDM-PON environments through novel scheduler implementations using Xilinx FPGA, Intel DPDK, and open-source frameworks like ONF SEBA R-CORD and OAI software radio stacks. This research directly addresses critical challenges in network disaggregation, legacy function modernization, and dynamic resource pooling for 5G/6G metro-access networks.
As a core contributor to Trinity College Dublin's Optical Network Architecture group, Dr Slyne drives experimental validation of converged network architectures through simulation, virtualization, and hardware prototyping initiatives targeting dependable telecommunications infrastructure.
