Prof. Dr. Frank Loose is a Professor of Mathematics at the University of Tübingen, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, where he works in the Department of Mathematics with a focus on Mathematical Physics. Since October 1, 2015, he has served as deputy director of the Tübingen School of Education (TüSE), with responsibilities including chairing the Teaching Board which advises on general and interdisciplinary issues related to teacher training programs and makes recommendations to the Rectorate, Dean's Offices, and Senate Commission for Studies and Teaching.
Prof. Loose's research spans both pure mathematics and mathematics education. His mathematical research focuses on differential geometry, particularly symplectic and complex geometry, transformation groups, 3-dimensional manifolds, algebraic topology, knot theory (especially Khovanov homology), rational homotopy theory, and mathematical physics including topological quantum field theories and higher category theory. His educational research centers on mathematics didactics, competency modeling, digital media in teaching at schools and universities, and the transition from school to university.
His recent publications demonstrate a strong dual focus: theoretical mathematical research in geometry and topology, and applied research in mathematics education. The educational publications particularly emphasize competency modeling in teacher education, the relationship between subject-specific and pedagogical competencies, and the use of technology in mathematics instruction. His mathematical publications explore classification problems in geometry and topology, particularly related to 3-manifolds and Lie algebras. This interdisciplinary approach bridges pure mathematics with practical educational applications.
Prof. Loose has supervised three doctoral students: Sandra Lehning (focusing on competence modeling), David Seez (working on Morse homology), and Anastasios Papadopoulos (researching stable homotopy theory and higher algebra). He has also been actively involved in working groups including 'Mathematics between School and University' and has contributed to museum exhibits on mathematical models at the University of Tübingen's museum, demonstrating his commitment to making mathematics accessible to broader audiences.
