Frank Lehman is an Associate Professor of Music at Tufts University, affiliated with the School of Arts and Sciences and the Department of Music. His research focuses on film music structure, particularly analyzing the works of John Williams and Hans Zimmer, and their cultural impact. He holds a PhD from Harvard University (2012) and a BA from Brown University (2006).
Lehman's work includes a thematic catalog of Star Wars music, recognized as authoritative, and his monograph Hollywood Harmony: Musical Wonder and the Sound of Cinema (2018) explores chromaticism in film scores. He serves as Director of Undergraduate Studies and Music Theory Coordinator at Tufts, and editorial roles include Reviews Editor for Music Theory Spectrum.
His research interests span film music theory, transformational analysis, and ambient music. Recent projects include studies on Shirley Walker’s Batman scores and a second monograph on John Williams’ compositional style. Lehman frequently lectures internationally and contributes to public musicology through media features and podcasts.
