Frank Kachanoff is an Assistant Professor in the Psychology Department at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Canada. He directs a lab focusing on identity, intergroup relations, and social justice. Previously, he held postdoctoral fellowships at the University of North Carolina (Psychology and Neuroscience, 2019-2021) and Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management (Ford Center for Global Citizenship, 2017-2019), alongside a fellowship with the Fonds de recherche du Québec – Société et Culture. He earned his PhD in experimental psychology from McGill University.
His research examines how psychological needs like autonomy are influenced by sociocultural identities and intergroup contexts. Key projects include studying collective autonomy’s impact on psychological health and intergroup conflict resolution. Methods involve laboratory simulations to analyze group interactions dynamically. Recent work explores how restricted collective autonomy affects marginalized groups, such as LGBTQ+ communities, and its implications for collective action and systemic change.
Frank’s research has been published in journals like *Self and Identity* and *Journal of Personality and Social Psychology*. His lab’s theoretical and methodological approaches are detailed on his personal website (frankkachanoff.com).
