Frank J Brooks

Frank J Brooks is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Bioengineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) since 2019. Previously, he held roles as a Research Assistant Professor at Washington University in St. Louis (2017–2019) and Research Instructor in Radiology and Radiation Oncology at Washington University (2013–2017). He earned a Ph.D. in Physics from Washington University in 2008, an M.Sc. in Physics from the University of Missouri (2001), and degrees in Mathematics from the University of St. Louis and St. Louis Community College (1996–1999).

His research focuses on advancing medical imaging techniques, particularly in X-ray phase contrast, PET imaging, and tomographic reconstruction, with applications in oncology and pulmonary studies. He also explores artificial intelligence (AI) in medicine, including generative adversarial networks (GANs) for medical image analysis and developing AI-driven tools for diagnostic accuracy. Brooks contributed to a NIH-funded project for computational tools in medical imaging and led the development of UIUC’s 'AI in Medicine' certificate program.

Brooks has served on committees such as the University of Illinois Faculty Senate (2021–2023) and the Carle-Illinois AI Working Group. His work bridges biomedical engineering and clinical diagnostics, emphasizing quantitative image analysis and AI-driven innovations. He has authored numerous articles on imaging techniques, regularization in tomography, and the role of hallucinations in image reconstruction.

Brooks’ interdisciplinary approach is evident in collaborations with institutions like the Beckman Institute and his contributions to studies on lung inflammation and cancer diagnostics using PET and optoacoustic tomography techniques.
