Frank A. Pintar, PhD, is the Founding Chair of the Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering at Marquette University and Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW), and holds a secondary appointment in MCW's Department of Neurosurgery. He leads the MCW CIREN Center (one of seven nationally) and directs the ZVAMC Neuroscience and Biomechanics Research Laboratories, a collaborative facility integrating crashworthiness, spine biomechanics, and neurobiology research. His expertise spans over 35 years in biomechanics, trauma analysis, and spinal injury mechanisms.
- Education: PhD and BS in Biomedical Engineering from Marquette University (1986, 1982)
- Leadership: Chair of Faculty Benefits Committee at MCW; co-Director of VA Biomechanics Research Facilities
- Research Focus: Brain/spinal cord injury biomechanics, motor vehicle trauma, and spine surgical techniques
His work combines experimental and computational methods, including finite element modeling and in vitro testing. Recent studies address skin puncture mechanics, sex-based injury disparities, and underbody blast trauma. He has authored over 500 publications and secured grants from NIH, VA, and the Department of Defense.
Awards include Fellowships from the Society of Automotive Engineers and AAAM, and the Arnold W. Siegel International Transportation Safety Award. His labs uniquely integrate macro-to-micro research across crash simulation, tissue engineering, and neurobiology.
Dr. Pintar has advised over 50 trainees and collaborates with MCW's trauma surgery, emergency medicine, and neuroscience teams. Current projects include developing injury criteria for military and civilian populations and refining pediatric restraint systems in oblique crashes.
