Frank A. Farris is a Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Santa Clara University's College of Arts and Sciences, where he has taught since 1984 and served as Chair since 2018. His career spans academia and mathematical art creation, blending advanced analysis with visual expression.
- Education: B.A. from Pomona College, Ph.D. in Mathematics from MIT (1981)
- Early Career: Tamarkin Assistant Professor at Brown University
His research focuses on mathematical art, using techniques like Fourier series and partial differential equations to generate symmetrical digital and 3D-printed artworks. He pioneered "Imaginary Landscapes" and "SymmetryScapes" exhibitions, which have traveled to institutions including Cornell University and Bowdoin College under the SymmetryWorks! grant. His book Creating Symmetry: The Artful Mathematics of Wallpaper Patterns (Princeton University Press, 2015) explores wave-based symmetry generation.
Notable collaborations include software development with students at Bowdoin College and Santa Clara University, including Carolyn Liu (2018) and Wilder Boyden (2019). He served as Editor of Mathematics Magazine (2001-2005, 2009) and maintains active involvement with the Mathematical Association of America. Awards include the 2019 Alpha Nu Sigma Book Award and a 2016 PROSE Awards Honorable Mention.
Current projects include virtual 3D art using Rhino/Grasshopper software and exploring layer groups for woven pattern symmetry. His meditative artworks often reflect environmental themes, as seen in the 2022 "Rhythms of the Land: Spring" installation at Pomona College, created using local plant photographs. He continues to develop new mathematical visualization tools and collaborate on algorithmic implementations.
