He co-founded and serves on the editorial board of A Trabe de Ouro (Galician Publication of Critical Thinking, 1990) and Ardentía (Galician Magazine of Maritime and Fluvial Culture, 2004; Nova Ardentía since 2017).
His research focuses on oral Galician and dialectal varieties, with significant contributions to the Galician Linguistic Atlas project where he coordinated volumes on Verbal Morphology (1990), Atmospheric and Chronological Weather (2003), and Earth. Plants and Trees (2006). He authored the monograph Dialectology of the Galician Language (1990) and the audio-book A nosa fala. Bloques e áreas lingüísticas do galego (1996), co-edited with Carme Hermida, with whom he co-directs the Archive of Oral Galician.
His recent publications reveal a continued focus on Galician language standardization through linguistic atlases, maritime terminology in Galician culture, and literary analysis of Galician poetry. His work consistently bridges academic linguistics with cultural identity, particularly examining how maritime terminology and poetry contribute to Galician linguistic identity and standardization processes.
His scientific recognition includes membership in the Royal Galician Academy and the Board of Trustees of the Museum of the Galician People. He has co-edited significant scholarly works including Estudios de sociolingüística románica. Linguas e varietyes minorizadas (1999) and tributes to foundational scholars of the ILG (Institute of Galician Studies).
Fernández Rey has made substantial contributions to understanding the position of Galician within Romance languages, the development of modern Galician, border Galician varieties including those in Extremadura, and the situation of minority Romance languages. His work with the Archive of Oral Galician represents a critical resource for preserving and studying Galician linguistic diversity.
He co-directs the Archive of Oral Galician (AGO) with Carme Hermida, a significant digital repository available at http://ilg.usc.gal/ago/, and participates in the Galician Linguistic Atlas (ALGa) project as a principal investigator. These resources serve as foundational tools for Galician linguists, dialectologists, and cultural historians studying the Galician language and its regional variations.
